Course Outline/About

  • How is this course run?
    The First 8 Weeks ​ 100% online, live but recorded classes The lessons are recorded and available for your convenience throughout the course If you are unable to join the live lesson, you will be able to watch the recorded video afterwards​ You will have password-protected access to the videos during your subscription to the course ​ 8 weeks (16 total lessons: live but recorded) Two, one-hour classes per week Classes are interactive with in-class work and participation Homework is assigned for reinforcement of the material Students will receive a certificate of completion at the end of the course after submitting the final assessment ​ Learn at Your Own Pace (but be disciplined) After the first 8 weeks of live but recorded lessons, students have an additional 6 weeks to catch up, re-watch lessons, and simply learn at their own pace​ This includes access to all content on the learning portal as well as access to your instructor
  • Learning Objectives
    By the end of the Beginners Course, students will be confidently able to: Form simple sentences/phrases in the present tense both verbally and in written form Conjugate verbs in the present tense and present progressive They work​ They are working Correctly pronunciate vowels, consonants and Spanish-specific sounds Audibly comprehend vocabulary, sentences and phrases Have an extensive library of pertinent industry vocabulary and lingo Understand cultural differences and how that impacts behavior in Spanish-speaking cultures By the end of the Intermediate Course, students will be confidently able to: ​ Form sentences and phrases in present, past and future tenses, both verbally and in written form. Conjugate verbs in preterite past tense, imperfect past tense, and future tense. For example: I worked. (preterite/simple past I was working. (imperfect past) I will work tomorrow. (future) Know how to correctly use the word "it"- for direct and indirect objects Continually build on library of Spanish vocabulary and lingo Understand more cultural concepts and regional differences
  • What Exactly Will I Learn?
    The Basics Alphabet, numbers, colors, articles, subject pronouns, verbs, months, days, weather, greetings, prepositions, etc. How to conjugate common verbs Industry Specific A new vocabulary list will be provided every week tailored specifically to the dairy, swine or poultry segments of the agriculture industry, depending on which course you select Culture Learn how to be more inclusive by understanding cultural concepts such as holidays, customs, regional differences, etc.
  • What resources will be provided to help me?
    Registered students will have access to: ​ Primary Resources Access to 16 hours of live and/or recorded video lessons, including fun songs and interactive activities Applicable practice during class with practical examples to help you communicate faster ​ Secondary Resources Pre-made digital flashcards of all the vocabulary Practice and homework worksheets Industry specialized vocabulary lists Online supportive games that Katie has created Links to trusted supplemental videos and resources Homework and Practice Materials Homework is assigned for practice and reinforcement of the material after each Thursday class. You can expect to invest a minimum of 1 hour per week on homework, plus the time you need to memorize the vocabulary. Personal Instruction/Support Students are encouraged to email the instructor with questions that arise during homework and practice. Katie is also available to schedule one-on-one time for additional help

  • Degrees in Secondary Education, Spanish and Business Management and Marketing

  • Former Spanish teacher in Middle and High School for 4+ years

  • Previous Adjunct Professor of Agricultural Spanish at SUNY Cobleskill

  • Developed curriculum and instructed  ag specific online courses for 5+ years

  • ESL- English as a Second Language certified

  • Study abroad experience in Panama and Mexico

  • 2008 Employer of the Year (Dotterer Dairy) from The PA Department of Education Migrant Education Program
